Ducati Panigale V4 Gets 218 Horsepower, but the Gearing Change Is More Interesting

Ducati has found another two horsepower for the Panigale V4. The 2027 model now produces 218 horsepower, which sounds impressive until you remember that its predecessor already made 216. At this level, another couple of horses aren’t likely to transform the riding experience.

What caught my attention was a much smaller change.

Ducati has altered the final drive ratio from 16/41 to 17/42. During development testing at Vallelunga, the revised gearing allowed riders to complete a lap with two fewer gear changes. That helped the new motorcycle finish 0.4 seconds ahead of the previous version.

Four-tenths might not sound like much. On a racetrack, however, it’s enough to make engineers look closely at where the time was gained.

The 1,103 cc Desmosedici Stradale engine has received revised intake, exhaust and lubrication components. Maximum power arrives at 13,500 rpm, while the rev limiter reaches 15,000 rpm in second through fifth gears.

Ducati has also made the front frame less rigid laterally, reducing stiffness by 12 percent. The idea is to give the rider better feedback and help the front tyre maintain contact when the motorcycle is leaned over.

That’s the sort of modification most owners would struggle to appreciate during an ordinary Sunday ride. On a circuit, where the same corners are repeated lap after lap, even small differences in steering behaviour become noticeable.

The braking electronics have been revised, too.

Dynamic Engine Brake adjusts engine braking according to rear-tyre load, while Race Brake Control makes more deliberate use of the rear wheel during hard deceleration.

Ducati says the changes help riders brake later and manage corner entry more precisely. They’re manufacturer claims for now, rather than results from an independent comparison.

Weight remains another important part of the equation. The standard Panigale V4 is quoted at 191 kg without fuel, with the V4 S weighing 187 kg.

An optional Akrapovič racing exhaust reduces weight by another 6.6 kg and adds a claimed eleven horsepower.

There’s also a new personalisation programme. Through Ducati Factory Made, V4 S customers can choose from eleven colours, including five inspired by Lamborghini’s Ad Personam catalogue.

European deliveries are scheduled for March 2027, with North America following in April.

The Panigale V4 was hardly lacking performance before these changes. Ducati’s latest update is more about making that performance easier to use, particularly for riders who spend enough time on a circuit to notice the difference between one gear change and the next.
