Yamaha YE 01 – Electric Motocross Concept

Yamaha’s Electric Motocross Bike Has Something Most EVs Don’t: A Clutch

Electric motorcycles usually eliminate one of the things riders have spent decades learning to use: the clutch. Yamaha has decided that motocross might be more enjoyable if that familiar control stays exactly where it belongs.

That’s one of the more unusual details of the YE-01 Racing Concept.

The electric motocross machine was developed with French manufacturer Electric Motion and prepared for an exhibition appearance at the 2026 Motocross of Nations in Ernée, France.

Yamaha announced the demonstration ahead of the event, which began on October 2.

The project isn’t simply an attempt to put a battery into an existing motocross motorcycle.

Yamaha has combined its experience developing the YZ450F with electric powertrain technology from Electric Motion. The result is a competition-oriented concept intended to explore how electric motorcycles might fit into motocross racing.

And the clutch is central to that experiment.

Unlike many electric motorcycles, the YE-01 uses a mechanical clutch. Yamaha says it allows riders to control driving force through the lever, preserving an element of motorcycle control that experienced motocross competitors already understand.

It’s an interesting decision.

Electric motors can deliver strong torque without the gear changes associated with conventional engines. That simplicity is often presented as one of their advantages.

But motocross isn’t only about getting from one place to another.

Riders constantly adjust their inputs while accelerating, landing jumps and negotiating difficult corners. The feeling of controlling power can be as important as the amount of power available.

Yamaha appears unwilling to abandon that connection.

The YE-01 also uses a newly designed frame drawing on the company’s YZ450F chassis knowledge. The aim is to provide stability, handling and feedback suited to demanding off-road riding.

Its electric power unit was developed specifically for the concept in cooperation with Electric Motion.

There is a competitive reason behind the project as well.

Yamaha is studying potential participation in MXEP, an electric motocross racing category planned for the future. The YE-01 is therefore more than an isolated design exercise.

The concept had already appeared at EICMA in 2025, but the Motocross of Nations demonstration offered a different opportunity: showing the motorcycle in motion.

That distinction matters.

A static display can demonstrate styling and engineering. A running motorcycle provides a better indication of how those ideas might work on a track.

Yamaha hasn’t announced a production version or a customer price.

For now, the YE-01 is a racing concept. Its mechanical clutch, however, suggests that Yamaha believes electrification doesn’t have to mean abandoning everything riders enjoy about conventional motocross bikes.
