Ducati Desmo450 MX – Motocross Performance and New Gearing

Ducati Desmo450 MX Gets a 51-Tooth Sprocket for 2027. That’s Not Its Only Change

Ducati’s first motocross bike has barely completed its first year on the market, yet the company is already making changes. The 2027 Desmo450 MX gets revised gearing, new tyres and several mechanical updates developed after a season of racing.

Some of the changes are surprisingly small.

The rear sprocket now has 51 teeth, giving the bike shorter final gearing. Ducati says this improves response when accelerating out of corners, where getting power to the ground quickly can matter more than outright top speed.

There’s also a larger 40 mm fuel filler opening. Riders and mechanics should appreciate that during a busy day at the track.

The gearshift and rear brake pedals have redesigned tips, while Pirelli Scorpion MX32 tyres replace the previous rubber.

Ducati has made changes inside the motorcycle, too.

The starter motor gear receives revised tolerances, and the water pump gets an updated oil seal. Engineers have reinforced the exhaust connection, engine mounting brackets and several components exposed to impacts.

These aren’t the sort of updates that attract attention in a showroom. They’re the details that can become important after months of hard riding.

The engine remains a 449.6 cc single-cylinder with desmodromic valve operation. Ducati quotes 63.5 horsepower at 9,400 rpm and 53.5 Nm of torque at 7,500 rpm.

A lightweight aluminium frame, Showa suspension and Brembo brakes complete the main mechanical package.

For 2027, Ducati is also introducing predictive maintenance through an optional Wi-Fi module. Rather than relying only on fixed service intervals, the system analyses how the motorcycle is used and adjusts maintenance recommendations accordingly.

That’s an interesting addition to a machine designed to spend much of its life being ridden hard.

The more expensive Desmo450 MX Factory receives the same updates. It also keeps its titanium Akrapovič exhaust, specially finished Showa suspension, machined triple clamps and starting device.

Its Wi-Fi module comes as standard.

American buyers get a slightly different arrangement. Ducati has developed specific suspension settings for the US market, along with triple clamps using a 22 mm offset instead of 20 mm.

There’s a restriction concerning the Factory model, however.

The 2027 Desmo450 MX Factory won’t be offered in North America. Ducati will continue selling the limited-edition 2026 version there instead.

Both 2027 versions are arriving at selected European dealerships before distribution expands elsewhere.

After its first season, Ducati hasn’t reinvented the Desmo450 MX. It’s concentrating on the parts that riders and mechanics are most likely to notice once the bike gets dirty.
